Volvo Construction Equipment has announced the addition of three new electric machines to its portfolio of zero-exhaust emission machines.
The L120 Electric wheel loader, L90 Electric wheel loader and the EWR150 Electric wheeled excavator have been unveiled.
Volvo CE’s latest electric machines range in size from 15 to 20 tons.
These machines are designed to operate efficiently in low-carbon zones, noise-sensitive areas, and indoor environments without the need for additional ventilation.
They allow for extended working hours beyond standard shifts due to their operation and lack of exhaust fumes.
The new electric machines promise significant cost savings, boasting an average 65% reduction in energy costs, 30% less maintenance and no engine-related consumables.
They are designed to match or exceed the performance of their diesel counterparts, while offering improved working conditions with less noise, vibrations and heat.
“Our commitment to building a better world relies on driving sustainable change across different equipment types and size classes,” said Elodie Guyot, Head of Electromobility Sales for Region Europe at Volvo CE.
“We already have dependable electric solutions in our compact portfolio and a growing part of our mid-size range. We are excited to continue delivering on this commitment with three new medium-sized zero-emission innovations that benefit from our industry-leading electric technology.”
The 20-ton L120 Electric wheel loader, the first to launch, is suitable for various applications, including construction sites, ports, logistics centers, waste management, urban infrastructure, and agriculture.
It can operate for a full day (5-9 hours) on a single charge, depending on the application and environment.
The machine can recharge from 10-100% in 1 hour 40 minutes using a 180 kW DC fast charger or Volvo’s PU500 mobile power unit, and in seven hours with a 40 kW DC portable charger overnight.
The L120 Electric will be available in select markets globally starting at the end of 2024.
The 15-ton L90 Electric wheel loader is suitable for jobs including industrial material handling, forestry, agriculture, landscaping, quarries, and waste management.
Featuring dedicated electric motors for propulsion and hydraulics, it provides faster response and shorter cycle times than conventional models. The L90 Electric can operate for 4-5 hours on medium-duty tasks and a full day on lighter tasks, with charging options similar to the L120 Electric, this model will be available in Europe starting in 2025.
Volvo CE’s first electric short-tail wheeled excavator, the 15-ton EWR150 Electric, is ideal for inner-city and confined space operations.
It supports various applications across construction, road work, utility installation, and landscaping, with the ability to quickly relocate between job sites.
This factory-built electric machine offers significant energy efficiency and lower running costs compared to converted electric options.
It can operate for a full day on a single charge, with overnight charging via an on-board charger or optional fast chargers.
The EWR150 Electric will be available to select customers in Germany, France, Sweden, Norway, and the Netherlands from mid 2025.
