Updated Komatsu wheel loader quarries tech to assist newbie operators

Komatsu has announced the launch of the WA700-8, which it says is a “cutting-edge” wheel loader that sets a new benchmark for quarry operations and aggregate production.

Designed to complement 70-ton haul trucks, the updated machine delivers improvements in power, efficiency, and operator comfort compared to its predecessor, the WA700-3.

It boasts up to 8% more gross power and 15% more torque, making it a formidable choice for the toughest jobs.

Its increased lifting force and rated load, which have grown by 6%, allow operators to handle larger volumes of materials.

In addition, the WA700-8 achieves up to 8% better fuel efficiency, a critical factor in reducing operating costs while maintaining exceptional productivity.

Komatsu has reimagined the operator’s experience, introducing a redesigned cabin that prioritises comfort and ease of use.

The spacious cab features advanced joystick steering and electronic pilot control levers, offering precise operation.

Integrated automation systems, including auto digging, semi-auto, and semi-auto dump functions streamline repetitive tasks, enabling operators to complete load cycles faster and with greater accuracy.

These systems are particularly beneficial for less experienced operators, bridging skills gaps and boosting overall operational efficiency, Komatsu says.

The WA700-8 is designed for top performance on challenging terrains.

Its variable traction control system enhances safety and prolongs tire life by preventing slippage in wet or slippery conditions.

The loader’s modulated clutch system provides smooth control during critical operations, such as loading trucks.

Furthermore, the KomVision camera system offers operators a comprehensive view of the machine’s surroundings, improving visibility and reducing blind spots.

The integrated Komtrax Plus system provides real-time remote monitoring and valuable insights into the machine’s performance, helping to minimise unplanned downtime and enhance productivity.

Sebastian Witkowski, a Komatsu product manager, highlighted the loader’s advantages for quarry operations.

“The new WA700-8 can help quarry operations hit that sweet spot for 70-ton truck loading, making every pass count. With a heavier operating weight, greater static tipping load, and larger breakout force than the previous model, the WA700-8 is a productive and efficient wheel loader that is ideal for quarry operations.”
