Case Construction Equipment has announced the introduction of the 580 EV backhoe loader, which has been dubbed Project Zeus.
The company claims the 580 EV is the first fully-electric backhoe loader and says it will totally alter construction operations with lower daily operating costs, zero emissions and reduced maintenance demands.
The 580 EV‘s power and performance are on par with its diesel-powered counterparts in Case’s product line, but offering a significant advantage for utility and government contractors who are increasingly incentivised to use alternative fuel equipment to reduce emissions.
The electric backhoe loader will be especially beneficial for local councils, where the elimination of emissions is crucial in urban environments and densely-populated areas.
Additionally, the machine’s reduced noise output will contribute to quieter operations, a major advantage in noise-sensitive locations.
“Case has been a leader in backhoe innovation since we introduced the first factory-integrated backhoe loader in 1957,” said Leandro Lecheta, head of construction equipment for North America at CNH Industrial.
“The 580 EV is a milestone in our journey towards sustainability and practical innovation, providing real savings and competitive advantages for backhoe owners.”
Eric Zieser, director of the global compact equipment product line at Case, highlighted the electric backhoe’s operational benefits, particularly the instantaneous torque response provided by the electric motors, which is superior to the slower torque build-up typical of diesel engines.
The 580 EV is powered by a 480-volt, 90-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack, capable of being charged by any 220-volt/three-phase connection.
Depending on the application, the battery can support most eight-hour workdays on a single charge.
The machine’s drivetrain and hydraulic motors are powered separately by the battery, ensuring hydraulic breakout forces and performance is on a par with traditional diesel machines.
