Big wheel loader with prototype hydrogen engine shown off by Liebherr

Liebherr is advancing its commitment to phasing out fossil fuels and decarbonising construction sites with the unveiling of the world’s first large wheel loader powered by a hydrogen engine.

At a high-profile event attended by political and business leaders, Liebherr showcased its pioneering L 566 H wheel loader, demonstrating the practical application of hydrogen technology in heavy machinery.

This presentation included a series of talks on alternative drive technologies, culminating in a live demonstration of the hydrogen-powered wheel loader.

Liebherr says that this technology offers a solution for operating large, energy-intensive vehicles without CO2 emissions.

While battery-electric solutions suit smaller vehicles up to 15 tons, it says, larger machines with higher energy requirements, like those weighing up to 40 tons, benefit more from hydrogen-powered reciprocating piston engines.

Manufactured at Liebherr’s engine plant in Bulle, Switzerland, its hydrogen engines deliver zero greenhouse gas emissions and minimal nitrogen oxides while at the same time, boasting high efficiency.

Additionally, the engines feature interfaces comparable to those of traditional diesel engines, both thermally and mechanically, marking a significant advancement in sustainable machinery development.
